The Toronto Blue Jays (49-56 SU, 50-55 ATS) meet the Baltimore Orioles (62-43 SU, 56-49 ATS) in the second game of a doubleheader. The Orioles will be looking for more out of Cade Povich, who really hasn’t done very well at finding the plate this season. Povich has averaged 2.6 walks per appearance and has issued at least three free passes in four games this year. In his most recent appearance, he walked five and allowed five hits, leading to a 4-1 loss to the Yankees.
That was actually improvement over his previous outing, which saw the Orioles give up 19 runs against Oakland. Povich lasted just one complete inning in that start, giving up eight runs and burying his team’s chances before they really got a chance to hit. His biggest issue has been that when he does find the plate, the ball tends to find the seats. In his past four appearances, he’s allowed six long balls.

Toronto has flown the white flag on the season. At 13 games out of first place, the Blue Jays know they won’t be catching the Orioles or the Yankees for supremacy in the AL East. They’ll be lucky to avoid the AL East basement, as they lack the pitching to stay in games against the rest of the division.
Toronto has a team ERA of 4.51, and the bullpen is somehow even worse. The Blue Jays’ bullpen has a 4.98 ERA and has been so bad that the Jays usually ask their starters to last at least six innings, knowing they can’t count on anyone at the back end. And yet, because of the doubleheader, the Jays have little choice but to throw a bullpen game. Given how well Baltimore can hit, the Orioles might hit the total on their own.
