Neither Querétaro nor Tijuana earned more than 20 points in 17 Liga MX matches in the last Clausura tournament, but they hope to change their fortunes this season, which will see them both in the Mexican border state play Matchday 1 of the Apertura tournament.
Both teams got off to a poor start in the then-first matchday of the Clausura tournament, with Tijuana losing at home to eventual champion Toluca 2-4.
