The Philadelphia Phillies lost more than they gained over the offseason. Their biggest moves were resigning Kyle Schwarber and adding Adolis Garcia, but they let Ranger Suarez, Harrison Bader, and Nick Castellanos walk. They finished the season with a 96-66 record and won the NL East, which was impressive. However, the team came up short in the postseason. The Phillies lost to the Dodgers in the NLDS 3-1. Now, with arguably a lesser roster, they will need to deal with a fanbase clamoring for a better overall season.
The Phillies will open their season at home on Thursday with a series against the Texas Rangers. The franchise that Adolis Garcia spent most of his career with. Texas added a slew of players over the offseason. Brandon Nimmo might be the most notable, which does not speak too highly of their work. The Rangers finished 81-81 last year, and the offseason has not done anything to make fans believe this year will be much different.
The starters for both the Phillies and Rangers in this game finished near the top of their leagues in ERA. Nathan Eovaldi finished 11-3 with an incredible 1.73 ERA. He will be countered by Cristopher Sanchez, who accumulated 13 wins and a 2.50 ERA. These two workhorses will make it tough for each team to score runs in this opener.
