The A’s can not be looking forward to a double-header on Wednesday after taking a beating at the hands of this same Rangers team on Tuesday. Texas used a 10-run 2nd inning to vault to a 15-8 win on Tuesday afternoon. Now the teams will play 2 games Wednesday to complete their 4-game series. The Rangers won both games to start the series. For the 1st game of the double-header, Texas will look to Michael Lorenzen (2-1, 3.52), who is coming off 6 innings of decent work against the Royals where he allowed just 1 run but did not factor into the decision. JP Sears (2-2, 3.89) will counter him for the A’s. Sears picked up his 2nd win in his last start when he went 6.1 innings of scoreless work against the Marlins. He will have his hands full against this Rangers lineup that looked tremendous Tuesday. On paper, these offenses could not be more opposites. The Rangers are 8th in the league with a combined .249 batting average while the A’s are 27th with a .215 average. If the bats cannot get hot for the A’s it will come down to how long Sears can last in this one.

With these teams combining for 27 runs in their previous game, we expect things to cool off a bit. Both starters have solid ERAs and will be aware of the need to go deep into this 1st game after the bullpens being used a bunch lately. That, combined with the fact that they can ill afford to be short of pitchers come Game 2 later in the day, the under looks like the reasonable play here. We have faith in Sears to keep the Rangers bats quiet while the As should not be able to get much off Lorenzen.
