The Tampa Bay Rays (34-18, 15-13 Away) will try to stop the bleeding today when they take on the Baltimore Orioles at Oriole Park at Camden Yards. The first pitch for this AL East battle is scheduled for 6:35 p.m. EST. Fans can follow the action on MLB.TV.
Tampa Bay leads the AL East by 2.5 games over the Yankees; Baltimore is 10.5 back. But the Orioles have been helping the Yankees make up ground. They beat the Rays 9-7 on Monday in Game 1 of the series and 6-1 yesterday.
As of late this morning, it was unknown who the Orioles are going to send to the mound to start the day. But the Rays will be going with Steven Matz. Matz is 4-1 in eight starts with a 3.70 ERA and a 1.11 WHIP. His last start was against the Orioles last Wednesday, but at home. He was pulled after four innings, but had a solid outing (three hits, two walks, and one earned run along with five strikeouts). He has done his best work on the road this season, where he is 3-0 in four starts with a 3.47 ERA and a .212 OBA.
Baltimore’s lineup has had 38 at-bats vs. Matz and recorded eight hits for a .211 OBA.

I understand why the public is getting behind the Rays so much despite their recent struggles. The division leader should be able to handle the weaker teams in the division—but they haven’t. Tampa Bay is hitting a little better than Baltimore over the last week (.248 to .236). But while the Rays hit better, the Orioles scored 28 runs (five games) to five for the Rays. So, based on what we know, I’m going with the Orioles to complete the sweep today.
