Finland and Sweden are set to renew their rivalry at the 2026 Olympic men's ice hockey tournament at the PalaItalia Santa Giulia on Friday.
The Finns were shocked by Slovakia in their tournament opener on Wednesday, losing 4-1. Antti Pennanen’s men dominated the entire contest but simply couldn’t get pucks past Minnesota Wild prospect Samuel Hlavaj, who finished with 39 saves.
Finland outshot Slovakia 40-25 and must be much more ruthless with its chances against the Swedes on Friday. It’s a tougher matchup, and Pennanen needs to find a way to get his best players on the ice more. Mikko Rantanen, the NHL’s eighth-highest scorer this season, was limited to 15:25 ice time against Slovakia.
On Wednesday, things didn’t go smoothly for Sweden either, but Tre Kronor eventually shook off the Italians, winning 5-2. Rasmus Dahlin registered three assists as Sam Hallam’s side dominated in the shots department 60-22.
Friday’s game is a must-win for Finland if they want to contend for the top spot in Group B. Leijonat can draw inspiration from last year’s 4 Nations Face-Off clash against Sweden, which they won 4-3 in overtime.

Our Finland vs Sweden Prediction
Both teams struggled to finish their chances on Wednesday, and that could continue in Friday’s game, as the star-studded squads still need to work on chemistry.
After giving up four goals to Slovakia, Finland will be determined to improve defensively and won’t want to leave too much open ice for Sweden’s forwards. The two teams combined for only three goals in their last meetings at a major tournament -- Sweden won 2-1 at the 2025 World Championships -- and another low-scoring affair could follow in Milan.
Our prediction for Finland vs. Sweden: Under 5.5 goals.
