On Monday, with veteran Verlander perhaps pitching one of the last starts of his long career, the Giants lost again, dropping eight of their last ten games, recording their 80th loss and virtually ending any playoff chances they had all season. They couldn't beat the Cardinals at Oracle Park; they ended up losing 5-6, despite Ramos hitting his 19th home run of the year and Devers hitting his 33rd HR.

The Cards, on the other hand, had a good night at the plate on Monday; this matched the Giants' record of 77-80, and St. Louis is aiming, at the very least, to achieve a winning season this year. José Fermín, playing second base and batting eighth, went 2-for-4. Burleson had an excellent game, going 3-for-5, and Panamanian Iván Herrera went 1-for-3 with two RBIs and a home run.

The Giants are the favorites on Tuesday, with odds around -180 at betting sites.
