The St. Louis Cardinals (28-30 SU, 28-30 ATS) look to get back on track against the Houston Astros (27-34 SU, 27-34 ATS) as they near the end of their three-series road swing. The Cardinals have been on the road since May 27, and they’ve played just below .500 baseball, going 3-4 in that stretch.
One of the wins marked the first game of the Andre Pallante starter experiment, and the early returns are promising. Pallante has mostly been a reliever over the course of three seasons in St. Louis, and not a particularly effective one. The Cardinals had him start against Cincinnati and he gave them six scoreless innings in a tough park for pitchers. If he can show this endurance moving forward, it could help St. Louis’ middling bullpen.

The Astros counter with Spencer Arrighetti, who has been inconsistent. Arrighetti does a fine job at recording strikeouts and has made a great prop bet, but he’s not very consistent at keeping runs off the scoreboard. Houston can usually count on him to throw 90 pitches, but he’s given up at least three runs in five of his past eight starts.
He has won three of his past four games, but that was also because the Astros’ lineup gave him a large amount of run support. In his three wins, Houston has scored 22 runs to support him. When the run support isn’t there, Arrighetti hasn’t been very effective. With Pallante looking like a different pitcher as a starter, the Astros might struggle to produce. Because of that, our prediction for St. Louis vs. Houston is for the Cardinals to win.
