Italy takes on Spain on Wednesday, September 3, at the Spyros Kyprianou Arena in Cyprus.
We're in for an exciting group stage match in Group C. Italy and Spain have been at it for decades now, and their head-to-head record is very close. Italy leads, 8-7, having recently defeated Spain during the 2023 World Cup Qualifiers.
This year, both the Italians and Spaniards have a 2-1 record through three games. Italy is coming off a 96-79 win against Bosnia and Herzegovina. It was still a close game when they led by only four points in the first half, but Italy extended their lead with a stronger second half.
Sweet-shooting forward Simone Fontecchio came through with a tournament-high of 39 points on 7-10 three-point shooting. It was easily his best game of the tournament, especially after struggling in the first game. Darius Thompson and Marco Spissu both added 14 points in the win.
Spain is also coming off an 88-67 win over Bosnia and Herzegovina. They erected a 10-point lead in the first half, then extended it with a 28-point third quarter.
Memphis Grizzlies big man Santi Aldama led the Spaniards' charge with 19 points and 5 rebounds. Aldama is averaging 13.0 points so far, but plenty more is expected from him.
