The Greek Super League for Panathinaikos, the current runners-up, won't start its new season until August 24th, and the lack of continuity could be hurting them at a critical moment. They are playing in the knockout stages of European Cups. Having lost their chances of playing in the Champions League, they also run the risk of the same fate in the Europa League and being relegated to the Conference League if they fail to beat Shakhtar Donetsk in their tie. The first leg of this tie, which took place at the Olympic Stadium in Athens, ended in a 0-0 draw, with the Ukrainian team controlling the ball with 61% possession.
Shakhtar Donetsk, coached by former Turkish player Arda Turan, has already advanced through two Europa League qualifying rounds; they still need to overcome Panathinaikos Donetsk and play another round to advance to the Europa League stage. First, Shakhta won their first tie against a Finnish club 6-0; then, in a valiant effort, they defeated Turkish side Besiktas in Istanbul and clinched the tie in Krakow.
The Shakhtar-Panathinaikos tie will conclude again in southern Poland. The betting odds reflect a chance of more than 50% of Shakhtar winning in 90 minutes.
