The Turkish capital's Besiktas Istanbul club failed to impress their fans in the previous Europa League, where they were surprisingly eliminated in the league stage. However, finishing fourth in the previous season's Turkish Super League meant they would have to play in two Europa League qualifying rounds if they hoped to reach the league stage again. At Trupas Stadium, they lost the first leg of their tie against Ukrainian side Shakhtar, and the chances of Besiktas not even playing in the Europa League are high.
The disappointment of not playing in the Europa League would be doubly so for the Istanbul club, considering how much they've spent on signings this season. In the 4-2 defeat against Shakhtar, Tammy Abraham scored a penalty; he was acquired from AC Milan by Besiktas to play alongside players with extensive experience in European football, such as Rashika, Joao Mario, and Gedson Fernandes.
But for Shakhtar, the young Brazilian talents Eguinaldo and Alisson shone. Ultimately, it was a valuable victory that Shakhtar will want to repeat in the second leg. The Ukrainian team lost the interest of many players in their ranks due to the war; however, they remain relevant in Europe. Last season, Shakhtar competed in the Champions League.
