by Carlos Zabala in Leagues Cup Picks
In the first two editions of the Leagues Cup, a tournament that combines Liga MX and MLS teams since 2019, there were initially two Mexican champions, Cruz Azul and Leon. However, in the last three editions, in a tournament that has become increasingly important, the winner has always been an MLS club. On Wednesday, Puebla of Mexico will face, exceeding expectations, the Seattle Sounders of the MLS, who also reached the last edition but only reached the quarterfinals, where they were thrashed by LAFC at Lumen Field.
All three of the Seattle Sounders' Leagues Cup matches took place at Seattle's gigantic Lumen Field. The Sounders have played a significant number of matches in the stadium they share with the Seattle Seahawks. During the Club World Cup, they were the only team of the 32 to play all three group stage matches in their home stadium.
The bookmakers' betting odds have the Seattle Sounders as the clear favorite to beat Puebla. The odds are also influenced by logistics: Puebla had to travel across the United States to play in Canada for the Leagues Cup, return to Mexico, and then cross the U.S. again to play against the Sounders.

Seattle Sounders - Puebla: Form Analysis
Without a doubt, of the eight remaining clubs in the Leagues Cup, the least expected to be included is Puebla, a team with a long tradition in Liga MX but in decline in terms of its sport, with a rather modest profile compared to Mexico's heavyweights.
Puebla finished among the bottom four in Liga MX in the last Clausura tournament, and in the Apertura tournament, which has played five matches, they are already second to last, having conceded 14 goals, making them the worst defense in Liga MX so far. Puebla didn't even make it past the group stage in the previous Leagues Cup, whose different format meant two teams advanced in groups of three.
Puebla returned from the first phase of the Leagues Cup with an atypical number of matches, so they fielded a mixed team of starters and substitutes on their return to Mexico and ended up being thrashed 7-0 by Tigres in one of the most resounding defeats in Puebla's history.

Seattle Sounders & Puebla Squad Analysis
Meanwhile, the Seattle Sounders found it helpful to face the world's top teams in the Club World Cup, despite losing all three of their matches, as they went on a 10-match unbeaten streak until losing 1-0 to Minnesota United in their final MLS match on August 16.
At the end of July, Argentine striker Pedro de La Vega of the Sounders was a key player in the Sounders' epic 7-0 rout of Cruz Azul in the Leagues Cup. Vega scored two goals.
The Sounders' defensive line has seen significant improvements; for example, Salvadoran fullback Roldan contributed two assists against Cruz Azul and registered another in the recent 4-0 win over the LA Galaxy. But in terms of defense, Colombian center-back Gómez Andrade stands out, having performed well and consistently in recent matches and having played the entire last three.
And if we're talking about Puebla's threat, the man to be heavily marked by the Sounders' defense is Emiliano Gómez, the Uruguayan forward who was key in the wins against New York City and Montreal, contributing goals.
