Seattle Sounders face off with Austin FC, and the biggest question for the hosts are whether they can build off the momentum that they picked up in the Club World Cup. The Sounders were never going to do more than pick up a goal or two in Group B of the Club World Cup, but they gave a credible showing in the toughest group in the field.
Based off the way they played in that tournament, they’ll be in a good spot here if they can build off what they showed. The concern is whether they’ve got enough left after playing three grueling matches against some of the world’s best. Based on how things went, Seattle should be able to handle Austin, especially at home. But the Verde are rested, and the Sounders are not.

Defense has been the name of the game for Austin FC. Only one Austin match all year has seen more than three goals in the net, and that was against Vancouver’s high-flying attack. Six of the past seven matches for the Verde have seen two goals or fewer scored, and the majority of those have seen the points shared.
However, that leans more toward favoring the Sounders than Austin. That’s because Austin really hasn’t done a lot on the road this year. The Verde have just four points in their past six matches away from Texas’ state capital, and even though Seattle has been playing while Austin is rested, the Sounders haven’t done any traveling. They got to play all three matches in Seattle (not that it helped), and they should be comfortable going into this match.
