The Mariners snapped a five-game losing streak by sweeping the Astros, a doubly satisfying sweep not only because it dealt a blow to their divisional rival but also because it reignited their home run offense. In that series, Arozarena and J-Rod hit home runs, and in the final game, Naylor hit a home run. Naylor had his first two-HR game of the year in Monday's 6-2 victory, in which Kirby came within one out of pitching eight innings.

These Mariners travel to Petco Park to begin a new series against the Padres; they will then face San Diego, who are fourth in the AL West with an 8-6 record and a 10-6 record.

The Padres have won their last four games. They also swept the Rockies and have won five straight. In the series against Colorado, they managed to emerge victorious from a series of closely contested games. Part of this success was due to some excellent managerial decisions. But one of the team's strengths also came to the fore: a very diligent bullpen, led by closer Miller, who consistently throws over 100 mph.
