The Seattle Mariners (49-43 SU, 39-53 ATS) visit the San Diego Padres (49-45 SU, 48-46 ATS) in a rare situation as a road favorite. Seattle’s expected to win here because of a large edge in the pitching matchup, as it sends out its ace Logan Gilbert.
Gilbert’s been as reliable as you can find, posting a 2.91 ERA on the year. His record is just 5-5, but that’s a little skewed because of Seattle’s total lack of hitting. In his past 10 starts, the Mariners have gone 5-0 when they give Gilbert at least three runs of support. He doesn’t need much more than that, as evidenced by his past five losing efforts. Each time, he held the opponent to four runs or less, only to watch the Mariners’ bats do nothing.

Seattle’s bats shouldn’t go silent in this game, because Adam Mazur has shown little ability to get major league hitters out. Mazur was San Diego’s second-round draft choice in 2022, but he appears to be more of a Triple-A pitcher at this point. Even that’s really not that accurate, as Mazur has a 7.11 ERA at the Triple-A level in four starts with El Paso.
Things have not gone better in San Diego. Mazur has posted a 7.52 ERA in six starts with the Padres, and sending him down and bringing him back doesn’t appear to have fixed much of anything. San Diego did at least win his past two starts, but it was because of the bats doing their job rather than anything Mazur did. In his past three starts, the Padres have provided 22 runs of support, compared to six in his first three starts (all losses). With Gilbert on the mound as his opponent, this one is likely to look more like his first three starts. Our prediction for Seattle vs. San Diego is for the Mariners to win.
