The Seattle Mariners (63-59 SU, 51-71 ATS) start a must-win series against the Pittsburgh Pirates (56-64 SU, 65-55 ATS), with both teams seriously lacking in momentum. The Pirates have completely fallen apart, going 1-11 against the NL West in August and seeing their playoff hopes officially end. Even Paul Skenes hasn’t been immune to the collapse, as he turned in his first non-quality start since June 5 last time out.
Of course, that was against the Dodgers (and so was his other one), and there’s no shame in trying to stop that offense. Seattle’s offense is far less powerful, which is why this total is about as low as it can get. Then again, the Mariners have actually whacked National League pitching this season, scoring 48 runs in their past eight games against the NL.

While Seattle’s bats heat up against the senior circuit, Logan Gilbert sets NL hitters on their ears. In his past four starts against the National League, Seattle is 3-1 and Gilbert has given up a total of four runs. In the one defeat, he allowed one run in six innings to Philadelphia on a solo home run — and ended up the loser because Seattle never scored. In 2024, Gilbert has faced seven NL opponents, and only once did he come out before the end of the sixth inning.
Skenes is still pitching well, but he might be hitting a bit of a wall. His ceiling has been so high that him “hitting a wall” is still better than most major league pitchers, but he has allowed two runs or more in five of six starts. Against Gilbert, even giving up one run might be too many. Pittsburgh’s offense just isn’t good enough to count on here. Our prediction for Seattle vs. Pittsburgh is for the Mariners to win.
