The Mariners started in Sacramento as favorites with odds of just -125 to beat the Athletics in the first game of the series, and they finally did so thanks to a home run by their new acquisition, Josh Naylor, an RBI single by probable MVP Cal Raleigh, and most importantly, a masterful performance by José Castillo, who pitched seven innings of one-run ball. Once again, in the ninth inning, Mexican closer Muñoz emerged to earn his 24th save of the season. Williamson, the Mariners' third baseman, also made two key defensive plays, earning praise and recognition from manager Dan Wilson.

The Athletics had a seven-hit night in Game 1 against the Mariners. For the A's, Luis Severino will start Tuesday, having made two efficient starts in his last two, against the Guardians in Cleveland and the Astros in Houston. In the latter, he pitched 7 innings with just 2 ER and 8 strikeouts.
