The Detroit Tigers and the Seattle Mariners will wrap up their entertaining series on Sunday at Comerica Park.
The Tigers suffered their second straight loss on Saturday after falling anew in another high-scoring contest with the Mariners. After being held to only three runs in Game 1, Detroit scraped up seven runs in Game 2, but their pitching betrayed them again as the Mariners outdid their Game 1 output (12 runs) by scoring 15 runs in Game 2. Casey Mize allowed six earned runs in 3.0 innings, ending his four-game win streak. The Tigers, one of the top pitching teams this season, are now sporting a 7.20 ERA over their last five games due to three horrendous pitching nights this week, including a 3-7 loss to the Rays on July 9.
The Mariners have bounced back well from the three-game sweep they suffered at the hands of the Yankees earlier this week. Although Seattle’s pitching numbers are still borderline ugly at 6.60 ERA in the last five games, Seattle is winning ballgames by trying to outgun teams, particularly the Tigers. The Mariners' offense has exploded over the last five games, generating 8.0 runs per contest on a .286 batting average.
