The bats were hot in the opening game of the Chicago White Sox (17-20) and the Seattle Mariners (18-20) last night. The teams traded 4-run 3rd innings, and Seattle went back-to-back 3-run innings in the 7th and 8th to win the race 12-8. Luke Raley of the Mariners went 2-5 with 7 RBIS and 2 home runs. Colson Montgomery paced the White Sox as he went just 1-5 but knocked in 3 runs.
The 20-run explosion in game one came to a shock to many. The teams are both sitting outside the top 20 in MLB in total runs scored and are tied for 27th in combined batting averages. The total for game one was 8, and now, for game two, the total is just 1 run higher as it sits at 9.
The starting pitchers for both teams are not anything to write home about. Luis Castillo is carrying a 6.29 ERA to go with his 0-3 record. For the White Sox, they will have Anthony Kay on the mound. Kay is 1-1 with a 5.20 ERA. While both of these pitchers are susceptible to allowing multiple innings of crooked numbers, it is still a stretch to think that these lowly lineups are going to repeat their efforts from the day prior.
