The Ottawa Senators will face off against the Seattle Kraken in an inter-conference matchup at the Canadian Tire Center on Thursday as the new NHL season continues to pick up steam.
For the Senators, the start of the campaign couldn't have gone much worse. The team is struggling defensively and has lost star forward Brady Tkachuk for at least four weeks to a hand injury. Tkachuk has racked up 407 points (191 goals, 216 assists) in 515 career games and adds a lot of physicality to the Senators' lineup, making his absence felt on both ends of the ice. Drake Batherson has also missed time at the start of this year, leaving Ottawa without two of its top four scorers from last season.
Seattle also has notable injury absences, with defenseman Ryker Evans and winger Kaapo Kakkonen out of the lineup. However, the team has flown out of the gates. With three games played, the Kraken have yet to suffer a regulatory defeat, celebrating victory twice. Lane Lambert's team began the campaign with back-to-back wins, allowing just two total goals.
Seattle struggled defensively in Tuesday's 5-4 overtime loss to the Montreal Canadiens, but the team was just minutes away from victory and shouldn't be too disappointed with earning a point on the road. After giving up five goals to the Canadiens, the Kraken could aim to tighten up the defense again on Thursday night. Solid play at the back was the foundation of their success in the first couple of games.

The Kraken have struggled against Ottawa in previous years, losing both meetings 3-0 last season. They failed to score in two contests despite firing 52 shots on goal. That said, Seattle seems to catch the Senators at a good spot this time. Travis Green's side hasn't been in top form so far this season and will also carry some heavy legs on Thursday night after starting a back-to-back set against the Buffalo Sabers on Wednesday.
Wednesday's contest marked the team's fourth consecutive game with at least four goals allowed, and Ottawa may want to focus more on defense to start getting wins on the board on a consistent basis.
