The second round of group fixtures is nearly upon us at the 2025 renewal of the CONCACAF Gold Cup, which is being played in both the United States and Canada. On Thursday evening, one of the host nations will be in action in Texas, where Saudia Arabia and the US will go head-to-head at Q2 Stadium in Austin.
It was all smiles for Mauricoi Pochettino and his men first time out, with the Stars and Stripes trouncing Trinidad & Tobago by five goals to zero. What is a reasonably young and inexperienced team took to the field in San Jose, and there was certainly lots of youthful exuberance on show as the likes of Malik Tillman and Diego Luna ran riot, especially during what a was a hugely dominant first half for the hosts. They'll now be looking to build on that performance by beating tournament invitees Saudi Arabia, who at the very least, may be capable of offering more defensive resistance than the team from the Caribbean.

That big win against Trinidad & Tobago came at the right time, that's for sure. There were doubts over the squad selected by Mauricio Pochettino, while it's not as if the US boys had come into the tournament off the back of a bunch of pleasing friendly wins. Prior to this tournament beginning, the Stars and Stripes had gone four games without a win, losing each of those four, suffering a heavy defeat to the Swiss just days before kicking off in San Jose.
For Saudi Arabia, the tournament preparations weren't ideal either. They lost an important World Cup Qualifier against Australia less than a week before beating Haiti by a goal to zero in their Group D opener. In general, though, in their part of the world, the Saudi's have been in decent form, losing only once since December 2024.

Saudi Arabia & USA Squad Analysis
From a personnel point of view, USA head coach Mauricio Pochettino isn't expected to change too much. Let's face it, the team that took to the field in San Jose cerainly deliver the goods. Malik Tillman and Diego Luna were particularly impressive last time out and are expected to once again feature prominently. Both Haji Wirght and Brenden Aaronson impressed from the bench during the first game, so there could be some movement there, though it wouldn't be a surprise if Pochettino named the same starting XI.
Saudi boss Herve Renard is also likely to be quite pleased with what he saw during the first round of games, so don't be too surprised if we see an unchanged line-up from the Saudis.

The Saudi's kept a clean sheet against Haiti during the first round of group games, but they're going to struggle to match that effort here, especially if Pochettino's men come out of the gates as fast as they did last time out. Similarly, the US kept a clean sheet against Trinidad & Tobago, which wasn't a huge surprise, but they don't keep many clean sheets in general, while the Saudi Arabians don't often fail to score, so we could quite easily see at least one goal scored at either end in Austin.
