Both teams are in a position where they can’t afford to give in any ground. San Francisco is third in the NL West, but a half game back for the third wild card spot if the postseason were to begin today. Toronto, on the other hand, sits atop a very competitive AL East division with a two-game lead on the Yankees, a three-game lead on Boston, and a 5.5-game lead on the Rays. To get the second half started off right, the Giants will turn to Justin Verlander to start the day. The veteran righty has not had a great season. Justin Verlander, at one time, was a pitcher you never wanted to see on game day; he was that good. But now, he is a 42-year-old arm that has stayed in the league one season too many. Bassitt isn’t exactly a spring chicken at 36, but unlike Verlander, he’s pitching well. Toronto’s lineup will take care of business at home and rough up Verlander. However, when the Giants pull him, they’ll turn to the best bullpen in baseball to finish the game. That could make it harder for the Blue Jays to cover the runline, but they’ll probably already have a multirun lead before Verlander gets pulled.
