All things considered, it doesn't seem like the Giants made the right call in signing veteran Justin Verlander for the 2025 season; In his penultimate month of competition with the Giants, the former Cy Young Award winner has posted a 1-9 record so far and, heading into Thursday's game against the Padres, has a 4.23 ERA.

However, Verlander has shown encouraging signs of recovery, such as when he earned his first W of the season against the Braves on July 23, and had his best outing ever for the Giants, pitching seven innings of just two hits and striking out eight. But he hasn't been very consistent.

The Padres had swept the Giants at Oracle Park in the series that began August 11, before being swept by the Dodgers in Los Angeles and losing the division lead.

In a part of the year that will define many things, the Padres, after this 4-game series against the Giants in San Diego, will once again host the Dodgers. Before being swept in Los Angeles, the Padres won 5 games in a row.
