The Philadelphia Phillies (10-19) have been arguably the most underachieving team to this point in the season. The team finally decided to make a move this week and fired manager Rob Thomson and elevated Don Mattingly to the head role. Their recent 10-game losing streak was likely the breaking point and brought Thomson’s run as manager to an end.
In his 1st game as manager, Mattingly saw the Phillies play with some rejuvenation and picked up a 7-0 win over the San Francisco Giants (13-16). Trea Turner and Bryce Harper combined to go 6-9 with 2 RBIs and 3 runs scored. Jesus Luzardo was in command on the mound and went 7 innings of scoreless work while striking out 8. Now, they will look to one of their top pitchers to keep this momentum going against the Giants.
Cristopher Sanchez will be starting tonight and has probably been the most consistent player of all the Phillies this season. Despite getting roughed up in his last outing against the Cubs, he is still carrying a solid 2.94 ERA. He will be countered by San Francisco’s Logan Webb. Webb is 2-3 on the year and has a 4.86 ERA. He has been going between 6 and 7 innings consistently, but teams always seem to find a way to put up 3-4 runs on him.

The Phillies have the talent to be one of the better teams in baseball. Something seemed off about the team all offseason and that bled into the regular season. Not to say Thomson was the only problem, but this team seemed rejuvenated after he was let go and Mattingly stepped in. We expect Sanchez to bounce back from his bad start against the Cubs and give the Phillies a solid 6-7 innings of work here tonight and pick up the win.
