The San Francisco Giants (48-53 SU 47-54 ATS) attempt to figure out their plan for the rest of the season as they face the Los Angeles Dodgers (60-41 SU, 49-52 ATS). The Giants are in a weird spot, as they aren’t close enough to the playoffs to buy at the trade deadline but don’t really have much incentive to sell. A sweep might actually be a good thing long-term for San Francisco, given that it would encourage the Giants to move Blake Snell.
The Dodgers are also in a weird spot, thanks to their recent pratfall in Philadelphia. On one hand, the Dodgers got some hard evidence that they’re currently no better than second-best in the NL on that trip before the All-Star break. On the other hand, they’ve reset after the break and have won four straight since taking four days away.

Landon Knack’s pitching hasn’t been bad; he just isn’t getting much in the way of run support. The Dodgers have lost four consecutive games where Knack took the ball, but only one of his starts this year has seen him give up more than three runs. The problem is how poor the Dodgers’ offense has been behind him. In eight trips to the mound this year, Knack has only received more than three runs of support once.
Jordan Hicks looked like a man who needed a four-day reset. The Giants have dropped four straight with him on the hill, and unlike Knack, he shoulders some blame. In his past four starts, he’s allowed five home runs and 16 earned runs. Considering he’s more of a ground ball pitcher anyway, the home runs are staggering. But Hicks has mostly been effective, and the Dodgers tend to let teams hang around too long. Our prediction for San Francisco vs. Los Angeles is Giants +1.5.
