The San Francisco Giants (54-56 SU, 51-59 ATS) face the Cincinnati Reds (52-56 SU, 59-49 ATS) in a matchup of teams just on the outside of the wild card race. The Reds have mostly played strong defense, but things blew up in their most recent game against the Cubs. Cincinnati lost 13-4 to end its brief winning streak, and that’s been the Reds’ problem all season. Cincinnati never gets too much momentum in either a positive or negative direction, which adds up to a team right around .500.
San Francisco looked like it was going to sell at the deadline by moving Blake Snell, but the Giants couldn’t find the right deal. Instead, they’re keeping Snell, which means they’ll likely play spoiler for teams down the stretch. Having a healthy Snell gives the Giants one of the best pitching matchups in the National League, and against a Reds team that has struggled to score, San Francisco has an edge.

The Reds’ offense put up solid numbers against the Cubs in their most recent series, but they scored just four runs in the previous series, suggesting the explosion had more to do with Chicago’s pitching than Cincinnati’s hitting.
Andrew Abbott hasn’t exactly been sharp for the Reds lately. Cincinnati has lost his past two starts, and the preceding start saw him allow five runs to the Marlins’ weak offense. Teams are putting the ball in play with ease against Abbott, and that’s likely going to lead to plenty of opportunities for the Giants to score.
