The San Francisco Giants (36-38 SU, 35-39 ATS) still haven’t named a starter for Wednesday’s game against the Chicago Cubs (35-39 SU, 35-39 ATS). Given the relative weakness of the Giants’ bullpen, this seems a highly risky proposition, but the Giants’ rotation is now down four starters, so San Francisco really doesn’t have much of a choice.
The Giants’ dire pitching situation already cost the team Nick Avila, who got claimed off waivers by Baltimore. San Francisco only has three real starters in the rotation, and the Giants would like to save an arm for Thursday’s Rickwood Field showcase game in Birmingham if possible. That leaves this to be a bullpen game, which puts the Giants behind the proverbial eight-ball while attempting to win their third series in four tries.

The Giants’ saving grace is that the Cubs will counter with Kyle Hendricks. This season just isn’t working for the once-reliable 34-year-old, who has seen his ERA shoot up to 8.20 this year. For his career, he’s had a reasonable 3.62 ERA, which underscores what a disaster 2024 has been for him.
The Cubs had initially moved Hendricks to the bullpen, which seemed to work out fairly well. In his past three appearances, he hasn’t given up any runs. But he gave up 27 runs in his previous five starts before the move, so it’s tough to have high expectations for him as he starts the game. With the wind also carrying out toward left-center, the ball’s probably going to carry at Wrigley Field. That’s why the total is as high as it is, but with neither team having a good bullpen, these teams can reach it. Our prediction for San Francisco vs. Chicago is Over 11.5 Runs.
