The San Diego Padres (52-50 SU, 51-51 ATS) match up with the Washington Nationals (47-53 SU, 56-44 ATS) in the first game of a mid-week series. The Padres had plenty of success scoring against the Nationals last month in San Diego, averaging eight runs a game against Washington pitching. That included projected starter DJ Herz, who seems to be struggling to get batters out at this level.
Herz started fine against New York, Atlanta and Miami, but things have spiraled since then. He’s only had one win in his major league career, and he’s given up at least four earned runs in three of his past four starts. That included the San Diego game, where he recorded just one strikeout for his lowest total in the majors. Herz is at his best when he misses bats. When hitters make contact, things do not go well.

Has Randy Vasquez settled into pitching for San Diego, or just pitching in San Diego? Over his past six starts, he’s held five opponents to two runs or less. The one exception came in Philadelphia, which is very forgivable given the strength of the Phillies’ lineup, But the fact that that loss came on the road raises questions as to whether Vasquez can really get the job done away from Petco Park.
Washington’s hitters have done their job against the Padres; the Nationals have just been victimized by pitching and defense. It’s tough to get swept when you score 18 runs in the series. But the Nats pulled it off because they couldn’t keep San Diego from scoring. If the Padres are getting run support for Vazquez, it will be very difficult for Washington to overcome his likely performance.
