In the second game, the Padres staged an epic comeback in the ninth inning thanks to a walk-off home run by Merrill. In a rotation that looked like it would be the most dominant in MLB, Emerson Hancock was the least talked-about starter. But while Castillo, Gilbert, and Woo have had a mediocre 2026, Hancock has been the pleasant surprise of Seattle's pitching staff.
At home, Hancock is pitching particularly well. In May, he pitched at T-Mobile Park against the Royals, throwing seven innings and racking up an incredible 14 strikeouts without issuing a walk. If the Padres' offense lets him settle on the mound, they'll be in trouble on Friday.
