Seattle’s five-game winning streak against San Diego came to an end on Tuesday as the Padres held on to a 6-5 win in Game 2. The Padres raced to an early 5-0 lead behind an RBI single from Xander Boegarts and a grand slam from Ramon Laureano in the first inning. The Mariners responded with six unanswered runs courtesy of back-to-back three-run homers from Randy Arozarena and Eugenio Suarez in the 5th inning to take the lead at 6-5. However, the Padres struck back as Jake Cronenworth and Freddy Fermin drove in a run each to retake the lead at 7-6. The Mariners never scored again as the Padres’ bullpen shut them down in the final four innings of the match.

Had they won the game, Seattle would have narrowed Houston’s lead to a half game. Instead, the Mariners (71-62) are trailing the Astros (72-60) by 1.5 games in the AL West title race. San Diego (75-58), meanwhile, moved one game within the LA Dodgers (76-58) in the NL West standings.
