The Padres took Game 1 and Game 2 in the San Francisco Bay Area, with Pivetta pitching. It was thought they also had a good chance of winning Game 3, but that proved not to be the case. The Giants won Game 3 6-5 with pregame odds of +101. They rallied to close out a 0-5 deficit, with the Padres leading in the top of the fifth inning. Pivetta had a good day early on, but it got worse when he got to the midway point, and the Giants' bats were able to figure him out. Chapman's 11th home run of the season got the Giants back in the game, and with a three-run home run in the bottom of the seventh inning, they sealed the final score at 6-5.

For Game 4 the Giants now seem to have the advantage in the pitching duel; until recently Robbie Ray had the best record for a pitcher in the MLB with 7-0, and he pitched very well in his last outing against the Marlins in Miami, where he threw 7 innings, struck out 9 and still ended up scoring his first L. Robbie Ray has 78 strikeouts with the Giants this season, the same number that Dylan Cease, who will start for the Padres, achieved, but with a worse record of 1-4.
