With the game tied at two runs apiece in the top of the eighth, a two-run homer by Luis Rengifo gave the Padres the first game of the series against the Marlins. Since San Diego called him up from Triple-A in early July, the Venezuelan has responded brilliantly, going 10-for-21 since July 19. The Padres aim to return to a winning record and extend the Marlins' losing streak in the series in Miami.

The Marlins had been perhaps the best team in MLB during June and early July, but before the All-Star Game, they were swept at home by the Guardians, triggering their worst losing streak of the year, which, with their latest defeat, has now reached 10 straight losses. Interestingly, the "Fighting Fish" did not lose any of those ten games by a margin of four or more runs.

Otto López rejoined the Marlins' lineup after missing several games with a finger injury. He hasn't had a multi-hit game since July 17, but he remains one of the Marlins' most compelling stories this year, as he's in a close race with Álvarez and Arraez for the 2026 batting title.
