The Padres won again, and they did so in Miami in a tough Game 1 against the Marlins. The Padres were the betting underdogs and the Marlins were favored with odds as low as -145 because the Padres started with Vásquez and the Marlins with the young sensation Eury Pérez. However, the Padres were able to score two runs off Pérez, the Marlins one off Vásquez, who pitched 4.1 innings, and the rest of the game was a bullpen-versus-bullpen duel.

Once again, the Padres demonstrated they have the best bullpen in the MLB; some of them were in last week's All-Star Game. Morejón took over where Vázquez left off, getting 5 outs and striking out 2; he earned the W, but again, Adam in the eighth inning and Suárez, who earned his 29th save, are insurance for the Padres during the final 6 outs.
