With the Tigers' excellent start to the season at Comerica Park and the strong numbers Flaherty was putting up to begin the year, the -145 odds set by the bookmakers for Detroit to win over San Diego in Game 2 seemed right.

However, the opposite happened, and few expected such a splendid outing from one of the Padres' best acquisitions, pitcher Nick Pivetta, who earned his fourth win of the season, completely dominating the Tigers' bats. Pivetta pitched seven innings, allowing only two hits and striking out six.

It was a 0-2 victory for the Padres, and the Padres will also be underdogs in Wednesday's decisive game. But if they win in the eighth inning, as they did in Game 2, the combination of reliever Jason Adam in the eighth and Robert Suárez in the ninth seems likely to turn the lead into a sure victory, with the Venezuelan recording his 10th save of the season on Tuesday.

The most vulnerable part of the Padres' starting rotation is what they'll put on the mound for Detroit on Wednesday: Kyle Hart, who has a 6.48 ERA in 61.2 IP but still has a 2-1 record this season.
