Strong winds are in the forecast as the San Diego Padres (46-41 SU, 45-42 ATS) conclude their series against the Boston Red Sox (43-39 SU, 36-46 ATS). The Padres have been the only team putting any power on the ball in this set, as they’ve outscored Boston 20-3 in the first two games of this series. San Diego comes in on a heater, having won nine of its past 10 games.
The Padres have since surged into a playoff spot, as they’re one of just six teams in the National League with a winning record. They’ve done it mostly by whacking the baseball, as they rank second in the majors in batting average and fifth in runs scored. Pitching hasn’t been quite as strong, but Matt Waldron has been an exception to that rule. Since May 5, he’s taken the ball nine times and hasn’t given up more than two runs.

Our Boston Red Sox vs San Diego Padres Prediction
Boston would love a little consistency from its starting pitching. Pitching has been a strength for Boston for most of the season, but the Red Sox really haven’t been able to get enough innings as of late. In five of the Red Sox’s past six games, the starter didn’t stick around for the end of the fifth inning. Even in this era, where starters routinely come out early, that’s problematic.
Josh Winckowski hasn’t yet shown that he can stick around in the Boston rotation. He has pitched well when he’s gone out of the bullpen, but the Red Sox want to make him a starter and sent him down to Triple-A Worcester to see if he could develop his third and fourth pitches enough. He pitched well against Toronto last time out, but one instance isn’t enough to get a good gauge on him. Waldron is far more proven and San Diego has whacked Boston pitching all weekend. Our prediction for San Diego vs. Boston is Padres -1.5.
