The San Diego Padres (56-50 SU, 55-51 ATS) look to get a surprising sweep of the Baltimore Orioles (61-42 SU, 55-48 ATS). The Orioles really have not responded well after the All-Star break, having lost five of their past six games. It really hasn’t mattered what the Orioles have done; their pitching and defense has not been the same since the break.
Baltimore has allowed at least six runs in five consecutive games, and it can’t be chalked up entirely to facing San Diego’s MLB-best batting order. In their previous series, the Orioles faced Miami, the lowest-scoring offense in the National League. The Marlins hit the Orioles for 18 runs in three games and took two out of three, which seems to have left Baltimore a bit shell-shocked.

San Diego sends Randy Vasquez to the mound, which has usually given the Padres a chance to win. San Diego has won four of Vasquez’s past five starts, and the one exception was because the bullpen blew up against Atlanta. Not only has San Diego been whacking the ball, but it’s played excellent defense. Prior to facing the Orioles, the Padres had given up three runs or less in five straight games.
Albert Suarez has mostly pitched well this season, especially at Camden Yards. But he’s posted an 8.31 ERA in his past three starts, which mirrors how his team has struggled over the past week plus. With San Diego pounding the ball and Baltimore having issues holding opponents in check, the value sits with the visiting team. Our prediction for San Diego vs. Baltimore is for the Padres to win.
