The Arizona Diamondbacks (59-53, 31-22 Home) will host the San Diego Padres (58-54, 26-29 Away) in a three-game series this week at Chase Field in Phoenix, AZ. Game 1 gets underway today at 9:40 p.m. EST with coverage provided by MLB.TV.
Both teams will come into this game feeling good, having won four of their last five games. But the Padres have won eight of their last nine while the D-backs went 5-4 in their last nine.
Arizona is set to give Brandon Pfaadt the start today, a reliever turned starting pitcher. He has a 5-1 record in 19 appearances (nine starts) with a 4.00 ERA and a 1.29 WHIP. At home, he is 2-0 in nine appearances and four starts with a 4.98 ERA and a .248 OBA.
San Diego is expected to give Michael King the start. He has gone 6-7 in 22 starts with a 3.38 ERA and a 1.17 WHIP. King has gone 2-3 on the road in ten starts with a 3.40 ERA and a .211 OBA. This will be his third start against the Diamondbacks this season; he went six innings in both, giving up three hits and two runs in one and four hits and one run in the other.

Our Arizona Diamondbacks vs San Diego Padres Prediction
I am not entirely certain why the D-backs are the betting favorite in this game, other than they are the home team. But San Diego has been playing better and winning games (8-2 in their last ten compared to 6-4 for Arizona). The Padres are hitting better (.304 BA over the last week compared to .243), and Michael King has controlled the D-backs lineup not once but twice this season. Pfaadt faced the Padres in relief (three innings) and gave up four runs but went five in a July 6 start and held them scoreless.
It should be a close game no matter who wins, which is why I’m going with the moneyline. At +100, I see the Padres ML as a solid value play with how well they’ve been hitting lately.
