San Diego FC will take on the Portland Timbers in an MLS clash this Saturday. San Diego FC are having an unprecedented debut MLS season. The expansion side shocked many by running away with the Western Conference in the summer.
Entering late August (Matchday 30), San Diego was actually leading the Supporters’ Shield race with an MLS-best record (around 52 points). Their key players have been in phenomenal form: Danish winger Anders Dreyer leads the league in goal contributions (around 30, with 13 goals) and often headlines the offense. Striker Marcus Ingvartsen and playmaker Franco Negri have also shone. The team is winning games by outscoring opponents in the second half and never giving up.
Remarkably, San Diego has scored more comeback goals than any other team (17 points from losing positions). Their style is attack-minded; they score freely and have the supporters of the fans behind them at Snapdragon Stadium.
Portland Timbers, on the other hand, have had a more up-and-down season. As of late August, they were hovering around the playoff positions in the West, but not as high as San Diego. Portland signed midfielder Matías Rojas and have players like Yimmi Chará (midfield creator) and striker Gabriel Torres, as well as winger Eryk Williamson. However, they lost to LAFC recently.
