San Diego FC and Minnesota United face each other in a match between two Western Conference titans at their peaks. San Diego FC, the 2025 expansion team, have had a spectacular inaugural year and head into the match undefeated in their last four games. San Diego have taken three wins and a tie in the past few weeks and, in the process, have entrenched themselves atop the West. Take notice that they took exhilarating back-to-back away wins – a 2–1 win at LAFC and a 2–1 win at San Jose – and showed they are proficient at taking points in adversarial environments.
Despite being at their offensive worst at times, San Diego has ground out wins, such as a 0–0 draw at Portland that clinched their playoff spot. San Diego is at the top of the points list and their consistency has been superb, they are first in the conference standings and share the Supporters' Shield lead. The team's current output is that of a balanced team that adjusts and finds a way to come out on top amidst mounting pressure.
Minnesota United have matched that level of consistency, in second place in the West and already guaranteed a playoff spot themselves. The Loons have been among the top team in the conference all year, and their recent performances reinforce that stature. They have yet to be defeated in most games in their recent schedule; for instance, Minnesota battled to a 1–1 draw against Portland and scored a solid 2–0 victory against Sporting Kansas City at the end of August.
With five games remaining in the regular season, Minnesota possess a strong record (14 wins and only 6 losses) and one of the most reliable defenses in MLS. They have conceded far fewer goals – fourth-fewest in the league – and that has enabled them to eke out points even when their attacking unit is not quite firing on all cylinders.
Under second-year head coach Eric Ramsay, the Loons have been nearly invariably in the top flight in the West, and they head into San Diego buoyed by having locked up home-field advantage for the playoffs. This match, however, will be a test against the only team ahead of them in the table.

Our San Diego FC vs Minnesota United Prediction
There is plenty of star power on both rosters for what figures to be a fun clash. On San Diego FC, the spotlight falls on Anders Dreyer, who has been a genuine MVP candidate thus far in his first MLS season. The Dane has an incredible league-high 30 goal involvements (13 goals and 17 assists), and he is the catalyst for San Diego's high-powered attack.
They will be matched by Minnesota United with high-profile players of their own, led particularly by Kelvin Yeboah at the front. The Ghana-born Italian DP striker has 9 goals and 2 assists to his name, topping the Loons' attack particularly since another forward left at mid-season. Yeboah's movement and speed without the ball have seen him leave holes in defense; he has been the central figure for Minnesota's attacking force, frequently finishing chances initiated on the side or inside the middle.
But Minnesota's greatest strength comes on the defensive end. Veteran New Zealand international Captain Michael Boxall leads a back line that has been nearly impregnable. Boxall's direction and positioning have been behind those solid defensive numbers, and he was named an MLS All-Star for his performance this year.
The game is a playoff preview, and the top two teams in the West are playing. San Diego's skilled, collective defense will be tested by Minnesota, and we are in for a nervous, close game. San Diego FC's punch up top and home field make the difference for them. San Diego has shown that they are able to break through stiff defenses with guys like Dreyer and Lozano, and they proved that as an expansion team that they have a knack for rising to the big stage.
Despite Minnesota giving a determined effort – and possibly posing a threat on the counter through Yeboah – San Diego should pull off a narrow victory. San Diego's marquee forwards should find just enough space to score three points on a 2–1 home-side victory. Whoever wins, both team's quality bodes that both sides are in for a spirited, high-tempo game that is befitting two Western Conference powers. Our prediction for San Diego FC vs Minnesota United: Over 3.5 goals.
