by Carlos Zabala in Champions League Picks
Xabi Alonso's Real Madrid season has undoubtedly deteriorated in November and continues to do so in December. His team has only won three matches since their 4-0 thrashing of Valencia on November 1st. They failed to win five times, losing their lead and falling behind Barcelona in La Liga. Now, former Barcelona manager and current Manchester City boss, Pep Guardiola, could deliver another blow to Los Blancos on Wednesday. Nevertheless, Real Madrid secured a promising start in the Champions League, defeating Olympiacos in Greece, and before the start of Matchday 5, they sit fifth in their Champions League group.
Manchester City and Real Madrid have faced each other with astonishing frequency in the Champions League over the last decade; since 2022, they have met every time in the European competition. In the last two Champions League campaigns, Real Madrid eliminated Manchester City. The last time this happened was in February 2025, when Real Madrid, with a hat-trick from Mbappé, sealed the tie at the Bernabéu in their favor. But in the 2022/2023 Champions League, which City won, it was they who thrashed Real Madrid 4-0 at the Etihad in the semifinals.
However, it's clear that the recent form of both teams is influencing bettors' thinking. Real Madrid, coming off a disappointing league loss to Celta Vigo, will not be the favorite to defeat City at the Bernabéu. In fact, of Wednesday's Champions League bets, the clash between the Premier League and La Liga clubs is the most evenly matched.

Real Madrid - Manchester City: Form Analysis
Manchester City returned from the international break somewhat unfocused; this cost them dearly, as they were defeated in the Champions League by Bayer Leverkusen after losing to Newcastle United in the Premier League. But with some dramatic victories, Guardiola's team, fueled by a formidable attack, defeated Leeds United 3-2 and Fulham 5-4 in an epic match. They showed no weakness this past weekend, beating Premier League surprise package Sunderland 3-0 with goals from Dias, Guardiola, and Foden. Now, they are just two points behind Arsenal at the top of the Premier League.
Guardiola's Manchester City played two away Champions League matches outside of England this year: they failed to secure a victory, settling for a 2-2 draw against Monaco in the Principality, but they triumphed over Villarreal at home in La Cerámica thanks to goals from Haaland and Silva.
In Champions League matches, Real Madrid managed a solid start, securing 12 out of a possible 15 points, despite losing to a Premier League team, Liverpool, and winning against Juventus, Marseille, and Olympiacos, all by a single goal.

Real Madrid & Manchester City Squad Analysis
Mbappé and Haaland, two of the world's best strikers, will square off in Wednesday's match. Of the two, it's the Norwegian who must be eager to face a Real Madrid defense severely depleted by injuries. Militao was injured against Celta Vigo, terrible news for Xabi Alonso, as the Brazilian joins Carvajal, Alexander-Arnold, and Mendy on the sidelines. Alaba and Huijsen will have to be forced back from their injuries.
This season, there's nothing to criticize Mbappé for; after his four-goal haul against Olympiacos, he's already scored nine Champions League goals this season. Vinicius Jr. will almost certainly join him on Wednesday.
As for Real Madrid, they'll have to worry not only about Haaland but also about Foden, who has been in excellent form since returning from injury. He scored again last weekend, and the 25-year-old Englishman has contributed six goals in just three Premier League matches since November 29th.

Our Real Madrid vs Manchester City Prediction
Manchester City doesn't have too many absences in defense heading into Wednesday, but Stones missed the weekend and remains doubtful for the match against Real Madrid. Even so, Guardiola's team isn't necessarily known for its defense.
The last four matches between Manchester City and Real Madrid have all seen both teams score and three or more goals. With defensive issues on both sides, and the refined attack of Mbappé and Vinícius for Real Madrid and Haaland, Foden, and Doku for City, we're almost guaranteed another match full of scoring opportunities.
Our prediction for Real Madrid vs Manchester City is: Over 3.5 goals.
