Many things have happened to Rangers in Scotland over the past year, but another momentous occasion awaits them starting Tuesday, when they enter the Champions League qualifying rounds and host Greek side Panathinaikos at Ibrox Stadium in the first leg. This is a repeat of the 2008 UEFA Cup Round of 32 clash between the Scottish and Greek clubs.
This will be Rangers' first competitive match of the new season, the first since they again finished second in the Scottish league, far behind Celtic, but also the first since the huge number of player departures and new signings that have created a virtually new Rangers team for the new season. Ultimately, the new board, led by a group of American investors, selected Russell Martin as the new manager after captain Barry Ferguson's interim term ended. This came after Philippe Clement was sacked on February 23, 2025, after the team fell 13 points behind following a disastrous previous season.
Panathinaikos has followed a similar path to Rangers; they have failed to win the Greek Super League since 2010. They also made moves in the transfer market and managed to arrange more friendly matches than Rangers before their match in Scotland

All of Panathinaikos' recent signings are available to play on Tuesday, including Chirivella, who is generating particular excitement among fans.
Rangers only played one warm-up match before their Champions League clash, against Club Brugge, which they managed to draw 2-2, despite trailing 0-2 after 13 minutes.
