After securing their second win of the season with a 101-99 victory over the Mavericks, the Pelicans lost their next two road games, first falling 119-126 to the Spurs and then 121-98 to the Suns in Phoenix. New Orleans again had to play without three of their starters, including Zion Williamson and Jordan Poole, and with those absences, Trey Murphy III took charge of the offense. In the loss to the Suns, Murphy III scored 21 points, two nights after his impressive 41-point performance against San Antonio in a game that nonetheless resulted in a loss.
The Pelicans travel to the Smoothie King Center, where they are considered underdogs by as much as 7.5 points when they host the Trail Blazers. After a streak of seven consecutive wins for the Pelicans against the Blazers, from late 2024 through 2025, Portland won the last three times they faced New Orleans.
However, the Trail Blazers are heading into the third game of a long five-game road trip, having lost the previous two, including a high-scoring game at the Kaseya Center against the Heat, which they lost 131-136, and a loss last Monday against the Magic.

Both teams lost their last games, but while the Pelicans, once again hampered by injuries, were routed by the Suns and trailed by as many as 32 points at one point, the Blazers lost in a more respectable fashion.
The Blazers have already won two road games this season, against the Lakers and Clippers on consecutive nights, and nearly secured their third road victory against the Magic. After overcoming a deficit of as many as 14 points, the Blazers had the game tied with one second remaining, but Desmond Bane of the Magic prevented overtime with an improbable three-pointer.
