The Portland Timbers host the Seattle Sounders in the Cascadia Cup, with the Timbers looking to continue their good run of form and the Sounders looking for a measure of consistency. Portland has just one loss in its past nine MLS matches (a 4-1 loss to San Jose) and hasn’t been beaten at home since an opening day loss to Vancouver.
However, the way that Portland has been winning its matches suggest that the Timbers might be vulnerable to dropping points to their long-time rival. Portland has kept just four clean sheets all year, and two of those were against the same team, Austin FC. The Timbers have allowed four of their visitors to take a goal home with them, and that’s far from ideal when facing Seattle’s inconsistent attack.

When Seattle scores on the road, it’s very dangerous. The Sounders have played eight away matches out of 13 in MLS competition this year, and they’re unbeaten when they’ve scored a goal. In their four road defeats, they’ve been outscored 10-0, so when things go wrong on the road for the Sounders, they really go wrong.
Given the Sounders’ history in Portland, it seems that things are more likely to go right than wrong for Seattle here. Clean sheets don’t happen often for either side, and Portland’s good form suggests that sharing the points makes sense. The Sounders are also coming off an ugly loss to Los Angeles FC, and historically, they don’t tend to play two awful matches in a row.
