The Portland Timbers are certainly a team that knows how to play well as a team; this was clearly evident in their last match when they traveled to Canada, to BC Place, to face the electric Vancouver Whitecaps. With a draw, the Timbers prevented the Canadian club from taking the lead in the Western Conference.
The draw for the Timbers was ultimately a good result. Portland has a comfortable points margin to secure a direct pass to the round of 16 and thus avoid falling into the play-in spots.
However, the draw also felt bad, as the Timbers took a 1-0 lead in the 39th minute but were unable to hold on to the lead in one of the final plays of the game when the Whitecaps equalized from a corner kick. The Timbers' goal was scored by defender Kamal Miller, who charged from deep, collected a bouncing rebound, settled it with his chest, and volleyed home one of the most beautiful goals in MLS history.
The Timbers dominated the first half, but they need to improve their defense on set pieces, as every corner kick the Whitecaps took was a half-goal, until they equalized through another disorganized and careless marking.
On Saturday, at Jeld-Wen Field, the Timbers host FC Dallas. They met in Texas in August, and FC Dallas won 2-0.
