The Pittsburgh Steelers (0-0 SU, 0-0 ATS) open their season against the Atlanta Falcons (0-0 SU, 0-0 ATS), matching former Falcons coach Arthur Smith against his ex-team. Whether that makes much of a difference is debatable, as Atlanta has made several chances from last year’s team. The Falcons changed quarterbacks, moving on from Desmond Ridder and bringing in Kirk Cousins.
Pittsburgh has also changed quarterbacks, although new quarterback Russell Wilson might not be ready to go. If he isn’t available, the Steelers will go with Justin Fields, who came in from the Bears in a trade. Fields never really got a fair chance in Chicago, and he’s anxious to show that the good he showed in Chicago was more of who he was than the bad.

The Falcons seem to be the healthier team right now, even though Kirk Cousins missed much of training camp. He seems to be ready to go for the opener, and at this point, he didn’t really need the reps to be ready for the season. Atlanta had a strong defense in place already, and it’s likely to build off that now that it has a quarterback that won’t cost it games.
Pittsburgh is a work in progress. The Steelers can count on the defense, but the offense remains on the iffy side. Pittsburgh thinks that Fields can develop into a long-term solution, but he hasn’t had much time in this offense and it isn’t clear which quarterback will be available anyway. Either choice, however, seems to represent a downgrade compared to the Falcons. Wilson seems to be running out of time in his career and Fields hasn’t yet shown enough consistency. With the Steelers’ tendency to match their spread result to their game result, our prediction for Pittsburgh vs. Atlanta is Falcons -3.5.
