The Pittsburgh Pirates (71-79 SU, 79-71 ATS) meet the St. Louis Cardinals in the continuation of a series that’s really a dead rubber. The Pirates already threw their best at St. Louis last night (somehow, Paul Skenes has already seen the Cardinals three times this season, which is either bad luck or bad scheduling on the Pirates’ part) and lost because they never generated any offense.
And that’s been a theme of this matchup for the entire season. In five straight meetings between the teams, not one has seen more than five runs cross the plate. For whatever reason, both teams’ bats turn to balsa when facing the other one. St. Louis has had the better of the play when the teams meet in Missouri, but otherwise, the most consistent thing has been defense.

Bailey Falter came up with a brilliant performance in his last trip to the mound, but odds are that was a one-time aberration. Falter hasn’t gotten through the sixth inning in any of his other past 10 starts, and he’s usually gone before the end of the fifth. That means trusting the Pittsburgh bullpen, which tends not to go great.
Having a healthy Lance Lynn might have helped save the Cardinals’ playoff hopes down the stretch. Instead, Lynn missed six weeks with knee inflammation and the Cardinals sank to being just a .500 ball club. He pitched well in returning last time out against Cincinnati, but he’s only a five-inning a night pitcher. Fortunately for him, St. Louis has a better bullpen than Pittsburgh. Either way, though, both teams are struggling to generate runs in this matchup, which makes the under the right move despite the low total.
