It was a rollercoaster for Mets fans over the offseason. They saw power-hitting Pete Alonso and closer Edwin Diaz leave. However, they were able to add starter Freddy Peralta and 3rd baseman Bo Bichette. Both will see the field here in the opener as Peralta is slated to be the starter and Bichette will man 3rd for the foreseeable future in NY. They hope these changes will get the Mets back into the postseason, which they missed out on last season. They finished with an 83-79 mark, which was good enough for 2nd in the NL East but not good enough for a wildcard spot.
Thursday, the Mets will open their season against the visiting Pittsburgh Pirates and face one of, if not the best, pitchers in the league. Paul Skenes is fresh off his 1st Cy Young award-winning season and is likely to be the frontrunner for the award this season. The Pirates did not make any huge splash in the offseason, but added some solid players to their roster. Brandon Lowe, Marcell Ozuna, and Ryan O’Hearn will all contribute to the Pirates' lineup this season, while they limit their losses to just a couple of role-filling pitchers.
Peralta vs Skenes sets up a tremendous pitching matchup for this opener and will likely make every run seem like the team truly earned it. Patience at the plate and timely base running opportunities are likely to be what determines this outcome.
