The Pittsburgh Pirates (54-52 SU, 58-48 ATS) play the second game of their series with the Houston Astros (55-51 SU, 56-50 ATS) after getting a win behind Paul Skenes’ stellar performance. The Pirates’ rotation hasn’t been anywhere near as sharp after Skenes and Mitch Keller, and that means there’s opportunity for Houston with the rest of the series.
Bailey Falter hasn’t really been doing the job since Memorial Day. The Pirates are 1-6 in his past seven starts, and he’s been charged with the loss five times. More concerning, he hasn’t made it past the fourth inning in four of his past seven starts. Handing the ball over to the Pittsburgh bullpen isn’t as bad as it could have been, given that Skenes usually gives most Pirate pitchers a day off. But if Houston gets deep into the third-worst bullpen in the National League, the Astros have a big edge.

The Astros’ starter gets through the sixth inning, come hell or high water, and then the Houston bullpen handles the final three innings. It doesn’t matter if he gets lit up for seven runs like he did three weeks ago in Minnesota or pitches a two-hitter like he did in Toronto. He’s going six innings, and that’s all there is to it.
Most likely, the Pirates will put two runs on the board off Brown, and they’ll have to try to get anything else off the Astro bullpen. Pittsburgh’s bullpen is a lot less reliable than Houston’s, and the Astros will get to face it for much longer. That doesn’t bode well for the Pirates to keep the momentum.
