The Pittsburgh Pirates (53-52 SU, 57-48 ATS) start a critical three-game series with the Houston Astros (55-50 SU, 56-49 ATS) and have their best pitcher on the mound for the opener in Paul Skenes. Skenes, the No. 1 overall pick in 2023, has been simply dominant since joining the Pirates’ organization. Incredibly, he’s been better away from PNC Park than at home, posting a 3-0 mark and an 0.86 ERA in road starts.
Most pitchers go through some kind of hiccup when they get to the big leagues, but Skenes has been remarkably consistent since getting to Pittsburgh. In his past seven starts, he hasn’t left before the sixth inning and hasn’t given up more than two runs in a start. As long as the Pirates produce anything on offense, he’ll give them a chance to win.

The Astros counter with their own rookie in Jake Bloss, who hasn’t been anywhere near as strong as Skenes has. When Bloss keeps the ball in the park, he’s done pretty well, but he’s had a major problem with the long ball. So far, he’s allowed nine runs in three starts, and five of them have come via the home run.
Houston has won two of Bloss’ three starts, but those were high-scoring games where the Astros needed to put up big numbers to make up for Bloss getting used to the big leagues. That isn’t going to work against Skenes, who really doesn’t have bad days on the mound. If Bloss isn’t getting outs early on, it’s going to be very difficult for the Astros to come back. Because of the pitching matchup, our prediction for Pittsburgh vs. Houston is for the Pirates to win.
