The Cincinnati Reds and Pittsburgh Pirates will meet again on Sunday with the home team batting for a sweep at Great American Ball Park.
The Reds banked on their fantastic pitching anew, but this time they turned to their rookie hurler Andrew Abbott to smoother the hapless Pirates in five innings. Abbott posted one earned run, two hits and five strikeouts in the Reds 5-2 win over the Pirates. Cincinnati will enter week 4 of the season as one of the best pitching teams in the MLB, throwing a 3.06 ERA, 0.96 WHIP and .191 BAA with seven quality starts.
The Pirates have lost three of their last four games, including back-to-back losses to the Reds. Pittsburgh enters the final game of their weekend series with the 10th worst ERA in baseball (4.39) and the league’s most pathetic batting average (.199). They are pinning their hopes on Carmen Mlodzinski to get them a rare quality start but he too is facing a daunting task on the mound on Sunday when he duels with Reds’ strikeout machine Hunter Greene (1-1, 1.31 ERA with 23 strikeouts).

It sure doesn’t help that their starting pitcher, Mlodzinski, shoulders a lot of pressure in his matchup with Greene, who is coming off a shutout in his last start vs. the Giants. Mlodzinski put up a solid outing in his last start, giving one earned run over five innings in an 8-4 win over the St. Louis Cardinals. Is he capable of leading the Pirates to a win? Honestly, the answer is No. I see Greene dominate, and the Reds score at least five runs again to chalk up another ATS win in the process.
